While there has been a great deal of hype around ‘the Cloud’ in the enterprise IT environment, many larger companies have resisted making the move – preferring instead to own and host their own IT infrastructure. But now this is changing, says Thys Kitshoff, Technical Director at email media company Rocketseed SA.
In the past 12 months, he explains that many local companies – including the larger ones – have been moving key services into the Cloud.
“…it is the kind of customers that tend to own their own infrastructure, who are now looking to move their mail environment, in particular, into Office365.”
According to Kitshoff, companies are looking to cut costs in a tough economy.
“It’s quite interesting that even the larger institutions are going ahead with this move,” he notes. “So the financial benefit must be massive compared to the information [security] risk,” he adds. “It has been an international trend for some time, but with the cost of bandwidth coming down in SA, it has become a more viable option for local companies…”
With regards to security standards, Kitshoff says that he is sure the larger companies ‘would have done their due diligence’ before moving to Cloud-based services.
“So it must be a secure option,” he adds.
